Dem Sen Shaheen on Pelosi Immigration Protesters: We Do Know Russia ‘Tried to Increase Divisions’ During 2016 Election

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) stated that she didn’t know what caused protesters to disrupt House Minority Leader Representative Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) press conference on Monday, but we do know that Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was an attempt to increase divisions in the US.

When asked why Pelosi was receiving backlash, Shaheen said, “DREAMers, young people across this country are frustrated. Because they came to the country through no fault of their own. They were brought by parents. They want to contribute to this country. They want to go to college. They want to join the military. They want to get jobs and be Americans, which is what they are. That’s — this is the only country most of them have ever known.”

Shaheen added that Pelosi is trying to protect DREAMers, and that there is “good news” in the fact that both Republicans and Democrats have said they believe we should protect DREAMers.

Anchor Alisyn Camerota then asked Shaheen, “Again, I’m just confused about why they’re holding Nancy Pelosi at fault here. Do they not like that she’s working with the president to do this?”

Shaheen answered, “Listen, you’ll have to ask them. Who knows who’s stirring up this kind of animosity. What we know about the Russians and their interference in the 2016 elections, is that they tried to increase divisions within this country. We saw it again in Charlottesville. So, we don’t know what’s behind this, but what we do know is that we need to take action to protect the DREAMers to allow them to stay in America.”
