Students at Columbia University are striking this week to bring attention to their call for a 10 percent tuition decrease. Student activist Townesend Nelson said this week that the university is “vampirically sucking every drop of blood” from the “lifeless corpses” of enrolled students. Students participating in the strike have refused to pay their tuition bills for the spring semester.

Columbia U. Partners with Amazon for A.I. Research Center

Columbia University announced this week that it is working with Amazon to create a research center for the development of AI technology. The center, which will be based in New York City, will operate for the next five years on a $5 million donation from Amazon.

Columbia Medical School Cancels Its Own Founder

Columbia University recently announced that its medical school will change the name of a residential building due to the namesake’s slave ownership. The building was named for Samual Bard, the founder of Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons who also served as George Washingon’s doctor. The move comes shortly after the school eliminated a professorship also named in Bard’s honor.

Columbia U. Has Not Rejected $12.8 Million in Federal Aid Despite $11 Billion Endowment

Columbia University has yet to announce whether it will accept $12.8 million in federal coronavirus relief that it is eligible for under the CARES Act despite its $11 billion endowment.
